T9 HAKODATE | A hotel where art and culture meet in a historic building in Hakodate

STORY

STORY

CONCEPT

T9 Hakodate is an adaptive reuse project transforming a Taisho-era landmark into a modern cultural hotel.

The project celebrates the dialogue between heritage architecture and contemporary design while reflecting the unique cultural landscape of Hakodate.

Connecting past to future, community to culture, people to people, it will grow as a vibrant hub—nurturing new encounters and meaningful experiences.

The time you spend here will become a new chapter in the history of this building, to be carried forward into the next era.

*T9 stands for Taisho 9, referring to the 9th year of the Taisho Emperor’s reign, which corresponds to 1920 — the year the building was constructed.

館内

History of the Former Kaido Kaikan

This building was designed by Yotaro Sekine, an architect whose name remains in the history of modern architecture.

In Hakodate, which developed as a port town, this building was once used as the office of a fisheries cooperative and supported the people working in the fishing industry.

It stood as a symbol of an era when people lived with the sea and the town prospered through fishing, quietly supporting the local economy and everyday life from within.

We aimed to preserve as much of its historic character as possible, while reshaping it into a form that suits present-day Hakodate and carries it into the future.

The role this building once played — a place where people gathered, information was exchanged, and the economy moved — has now been reinterpreted in a modern context of travel, stay, and work.

That is the vision behind T9 HAKODATE.

T9 [T-Nine] is revitalized and produced by the team behind the award-winning historic restoration project aremo koremo, recipient of the 2024 Good Design Award.

Alongside experienced local members from Hakodate, professionals active across Japan and overseas collaborate on the project. By combining a perspective rooted in the community with diverse ideas and specialized expertise from outside the region, we carefully shape both the space and the services we offer.

By carrying this historic architecture into the future, T9 aspires to be a place that gently connects Hakodate with the world.
